Camden Car Accident Lawyers: Winter Car Accidents
December 16, 2016
Winter is here and with it comes snow, ice, and distracted holiday drivers. As most Americans know, this combination can make for some harrowing experiences on the highways. Part of the reason is the poor driving condition due to the snow and ice. But, negligence and distractions play a role in many car accidents, too.
When you have been injured by another, regardless of the reason, it can be both life-changing and costly. The holiday season from Thanksgiving through Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year for highway emergency services.
Happy Holidays and Unhappy Winter Car Accidents
According to the United States Department of Transportation, snow, sleet, and ice play a role in nearly half of all motor vehicle accidents each year. Such things as wind speed, temperature and humidity, visibility, and condition of the pavement are also factors. Still, as reported by the National Safety Council (NSC), the majority of car accidents are caused by human error.
Although inclement weather is a factor, nearly all car accidents are the result of at least two elements: weather and human error. One of the most common mistakes nearly every driver makes is failing to properly maintain their vehicle. The NSC recommends servicing a vehicle at the beginning of winter including such things as:
- Antifreeze
- Battery
- Brakes
- Filters
- Hoses
- Tires
- Wiring
Also, something as simple as using the parking brake to stop when traveling on icy roads can cause a major crash. The same goes for mixing radial tires with other types, as well as using cruise control on slick surfaces. Each of these common driver habits can result in a loss of control when traveling on ice and snow.
Adding to the mix are the holidays. With people filling the roads in order to shop or attend parties, car accidents naturally increase. Yet many of these are caused by excessive speed, inattention, and simple negligence.
If you are involved in a car accident, be sure to take photos if able. Take close shots, long shots, and shots at varying angles. If there are witnesses, take their names and statements.
