On May 5, 2016, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) passed legislation imposing rules on e-cigarettes after nearly ten years of the product being available to consumers. Some argue that e-cigarettes will shift a younger generation towards eventually smoking traditional cigarettes. The new regulations make it illegal to sell e-cigarette products to Americans under the age of 18. Adults appearing under the age of 26 will also be required to present a photo ID in order to complete the purchase of e-cigarettes. In the United States alone, nine million Americans partake in vaping. Vaping refers to the act of using or “smoking” an e-cigarette. Although many health officials concur that the act of vaping is less harmful than smoking a traditional cigarette, any health effects regarding long-term use have not yet been extensively researched.

Exploding E-Cigarettes

While the long-term health effects of vaping have not been established, there have been numerous cases of defective products injuring consumers. Recently, a man in Missouri was walking with an e-cigarette in his pocket when it abruptly exploded. Following the explosion, the man sustained third-degree burns in numerous locations on his right leg. Because of the serious burns, the individual has gone through four skin graft surgeries in an attempt to mask the scarring.

Studies released in 2013 reported that the lithium batteries within e-cigarettes could explode and the National Transportation Safety Board banned the use of e-cigarettes on airplanes in 2015. Senator Chuck Shumer, following the new regulations, is still urging the FDA to investigate the defective products that are coming out of the e-cigarette industry. He wants e-cigarette manufacturers to take responsibility for the explosions and to prevent them from occurring in the future.
