Common Causes of Slip and Fall Accidents
January 10, 2020
Practically every person has experienced a slip and fall accident at least once. Fortunately, most falls result in minor cuts and bruises. However, some falls can lead to major medical problems. Slip and falls can happen both indoor and outdoor on private, public, or government property. When people experience slip and falls because of the negligence of others, they may seek to recover damages in the form of a settlement from the property owner’s insurance. If the owner does not have adequate insurance, or the insurance company refuses to pay or offer an acceptable settlement amount, the injured individual should seek the assistance of a slip and fall lawyer. The following are the most common reasons for slip and fall accidents.
Walking Surfaces
Someone who is unable to fully see all floor surfaces can suffer an injury from a tripping hazard. The darker a location, the more likely someone will find it hard to navigate surfaces. Fortunately, the remedy for this hazard is to add more natural and artificial lighting to the area. Additionally, trying to navigate an uneven surface can be challenging, particularly for those who are older or use assistive walking devices, such as walkers or canes. Whenever possible, uneven walking surfaces should be fixed.
Slips often occur because of wet or greasy surfaces. This could mean a wet bathroom floor in a stadium, or a freshly cleaned grocery store aisle floor that has not been sectioned off. Wetness reduces traction, so even adequate footwear can slide if the surface is wet or oily. For this reason, any wet spots should be cleaned up at once or adequate signs should be provided to warn those near the hazard.
Untethered Cords, Cables, and Wires
An electrical cord, cable, or similar item that has been snaked across a hallway, room, or corridor can become a tripping hazard. In all cases, cords should be away from the line of foot traffic. If a cord needs to travel across a floor, the cord should be appropriately hidden with a special cover. Alternatively, the cord or cable may reside securely under the carpet instead of on top of it.
Unanchored or Damaged Flooring
When flooring can become run-down due to poor maintenance, it can quickly get in the way of safe traveling. Even a small piece of rug that has come loose can be the main reason for a nasty spill. All flooring should be routinely inspected, especially in areas where there is heavy foot traffic.
