University City Construction Accident Causes Fatality, Injures Another

A 55-year old construction worker died at a work site in the University City section of Philadelphia when he was crushed by a drill that toppled over Tuesday night. Another worker, the operator of the drilling rig, was brought to the hospital with lower body injuries, according to fire officials.
Emergency responders found the man trapped under the drilling rig and spent 15 minutes extricating him. Conscious but breathing heavily and bleeding excessively, he was brought by medics to the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and pronounced dead at 9:45 pm.
Fire officials said that heavy equipment was being moved off a tractor-trailer when a drilling rig – which was being used to lift equipment, fell, trapping the construction worker underneath.
The operator of the rig, who has worked in the industry for over 20 years, had just started working with Cook Drilling Corp. of Trevose, PA, a few months ago.
There was a fuel leak from the equipment. No passersby were in the area at the time of the accident and because the rig fell away from the building under construction, no property was damaged.
