Effectiveness of Crumple Zones
July 01, 2017
There is no doubt that technology in cars has vastly improved riders’ safety over the years. Much of this due to crumple zones, structural zones in the front and sometimes rear of the car designed to absorb energy in an accident, thus protecting the vehicle’s occupants from injury, according to the American Institute of Physics.
When a car crashes, crumple zones are designed to absorb most of the impact, keeping it away from the occupants. Instead of having two rigid bodies instantaneously colliding, crumple zones increase the time before the vehicle comes to a halt, thus decreasing the severity of impact and related injuries. Crumple zones allow the car to crush like an accordion.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), occupant injury and fatality risk can be reduced by designing vehicles with softer front end structures resulting in larger “maximum crush.”
Employing the Laws of Physics to Make Cars Safer
According to Sir Isaac Newton’s first law of motion; objects in motion stay in motion with the same speed and motion, unless acted on by an outside force. If a car is traveling at 50 miles per hour, so are the bodies inside the car, unless something stops them. If the car hits a wall and comes to a stop immediately, the bodies will continue forward at that rate as well.
Over the years the design and usage of lightweight plastics in cars has enhanced the functionality of crumple zones. Lightweight materials have enhanced the overall safety of drivers. Carbon fibers can absorb as much at 12 times more crush energy then traditional metal.
While modern technology has reduced the severity of injures, accidents will still happen. In the moment, it can be terrifying to think about the effects on your future. If you sustained any injuries, how will you continue to support your family financially? How long will it take you to recover? There are many questions victims may have after an accident.
