Fall Driving Safety Tips

Fall Driving Safety Tips

The seasonal changeover from summer to autumn affects many aspects of our daily lives. It is important to be aware of the changes this transition makes, particularly on the roads. Fall brings unpredictable weather, wet leaves, and a surplus of school buses affecting your commute. All these changes should have a driver more alert and focused during fall travel to avoid potential accidents. The following are some tips to drive safely during the fall season:

  • Wet Leaves: As the leaves begin to change in New Jersey and the surrounding states, they also start to litter the roads. Leaves can cover traffic lines, potholes, and shoulders almost overnight. Keep in mind that these leaves can also act as ice when wet, causing hazardous slipping, especially if your tire tread is low.
  • Maintain Your Vehicle: Your tire tread is the first part of your vehicle that contacts the road, so it is important to make sure they are in good shape before traveling. The better your tire tread and condition, the better your car will handle slippery surfaces. It is also a good idea to check and top off your fluids, especially oil and windshield washer fluid. Because of the temperature drop, your battery will lose its effectiveness as well, so make sure it is checked and replaced, if necessary.
  • School Zones: It is a must to obey school zones and speed limits, particularly near schools, bus stops, playgrounds, and daycares. Safe driving skills should be amplified during the school year; slow down and take your time.
  • Daylight Saving Time: The autumn equinox means less sunlight. This means morning frost on your windshield, blinding sun glare, and chances of fog. Sun glare can be particularly dangerous because it is most impactful during rush hour. Sun glare can also blind you instantly and disorient you for several seconds. Even at night, the glare from headlights can become intensified from rain or damp weather conditions.
  • Deer: In the northeast part of the country, autumn marks the time for deer to migrate and mate, which means they could be anywhere. It is hard to predict if a deer will suddenly jump in front of you, so always be aware of your surroundings. If you are driving in a wooded area or open field, be alert of what is around you.
