Philadelphia Personal Injury Lawyers – Amtrak Train Derailment Leaves Devastating Scene
May 13, 2015
The Northeast Regional Train 188, heading to New York from Washington, D.C., crashed in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia Tuesday night shortly after 9:00pm. As of 9:00am Wednesday morning, six people have been confirmed dead, 10 are in critical condition and dozens more were injured. Federal investigators are on the scene to determine the cause of this devastating accident on the nation’s busiest rail corridor.
The exact cause of the derailment is currently unknown, but speed is the main focus at this preliminary stage of the investigation. Amtrak sent investigators to the scene immediately, along with numerous portable lights to help workers examine the wreckage overnight. The specific location of the derailment occurred along a large curve near Frankfort Avenue and Wheatsheaf Lane, not far from the 1943 derailment of The Congressional Limited, which killed 79 people.
In a news conference with Fire Commissioner, Derrick Sawyer, and Police Commissioner, Charles Ramsey, Mayor Michael Nutter confirmed the six fatalities and commented on the scene, saying it was horrific and not all people on the train are accounted for at this point. Of the 238 passengers on the train, more than 140 have been sent to nearby hospitals including Temple University Hospital, Aria Health Torresdale, Jefferson University Hospital, Hahnemann University Hospital, and Einstein Medical Center.
