Pool Accidents
June 04, 2024
While enjoying their time with friends and family, most people are not thinking about the risk for accidents in and around the pool. Sadly however, an average of six people drown each day in pools in the U.S.; and 30 percent of victims are children. While drowning and electrocution in and around pools are among the most serious types of pool accidents, swimmers must also be aware of other potential hazards that could lead to injury.
Slip and fall accidents and injuries are extremely common at the pool and are typically caused by running in the pool area or incorrect diving or jumping into pools. Additionally, pool owners have a duty to regularly inspect the property and make repairs within a reasonable amount of time. Common fall injuries in and around the pool include injuries to the head and neck, lacerations, and soft-tissue injuries. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that last year, there were 155,000 swimming pool-related injuries. Additionally, there were approximately 3,600 deaths at pools during that time.
Other potential hazards could result from mismanagement of the chemicals that are used in the pool. Too much or too little chlorine could have hazardous effects. Accidents due to faulty pool equipment are also among the most common pool-related injuries.
Staying Safe at the Pool This Summer
When visiting a swim club, check whether the pool has been inspected to ensure compliance with federal and local laws. Check to see that pumps are running and notice whether there is life-saving equipment easily accessible if it is needed.
Teach children water safety and keep a close watch on children at all times while at the pool. Learning CPR can be invaluable even if you attend a pool with a lifeguard since it is not guaranteed that a lifeguard will always be the first to notice a drowning person in a crowded pool.
If you do experience an accident at a pool, you should take pictures of the scene and notice if there were any safety signs posted that pertain to the accident. Be aware, that if you choose to pursue a premises liability claim against the pool owner, you must prove that he or she had a duty to prevent the accident and breached that duty in some way. Additionally, you will have to demonstrate that you suffered actual losses as a result of the accident. Compensable damages you may be entitled to include lost wages, loss of future earning potential, current and future medical expenses, and in some cases, compensation for pain and suffering.
