More Recalls Due to Defective Takata Airbags
December 18, 2019
Five automakers recently announced recalls for certain older-model vehicles containing Takata airbags, which pose a serious risk to drivers when deployed. The new wave of recalls affects nearly 1.4 million vehicles. This wave ensued after previous recalls on different models of Takata airbags. The faulty Takata airbags are inadequately sealed, which causes them to potentially underinflate. As a result, they are unable to protect the occupant on impact and have the capability of rupturing, sending metal shards into the cabin.
Currently, there has been one injury and two deaths attributed to the second model of the Takata airbag. BMW has immediately recalled certain models based on these new findings and advises affected consumers to avoid driving until the repairs are completed. As of March 2019, there have been 16 fatalities caused by Takata airbag defects in the United States. Worldwide, there have been 24 deaths and more than 300 injuries.
The Largest Product Recall in United States History
The Takata airbag recall involves more than 41 million vehicles in the United States alone. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall to be the largest and most complex safety recall in U.S. history, which raised significant concerns for the safety of those involved in car accidents. Replacement parts are not immediately available for all recalled vehicles; the NHTSA must prioritize deliveries of parts to areas with the highest rates of Takata incidents and continue replacing airbags in waves as the parts become available.
Is Your Vehicle on the Recall List?
As new vehicle makes and models are added to the recall list, you may have questions about your own vehicle. Fortunately, it only takes a few seconds to determine if your car has been recalled. Simply enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) into the search bar on the NHTSAâs recall website to find out if your vehicle is impacted by the Takata recall or any other defective auto part recall.
If your vehicle is recalled for any reason, contact your dealer to arrange the necessary repairs or replacements. Your repair should be free. If the dealer refuses to repair your vehicle as described in your recall letter, you should notify the manufacturer and consider contacting a car accident lawyer. If your vehicle is not on the list, you should make it a point to check on a regular basis.
