Retaining Wall Causes Traffic Headaches Along Interstate 295
March 29, 2021
One of the busiest areas of South Jersey highway will cause more delays for drivers, after a retaining wall collapsed March 26th along I-295 in Bellmawr. The stretch of highway is where the interstate runs alongside NJ-42 above Essex Avenue and precedes the merger, where cars enter the highway and either head to I-76 for Camden and Philadelphia or join others on I-295 for further northbound travel through Camden and Burlington Counties. The retaining wall is part of an $800 million construction project that has continued since 2016, an attempt to reduce noise pollution for Bellmawr residents and help drivers better navigate a tricky and often congested portion of highway travel. The construction is currently scheduled to complete in late 2024, although there is no word if this wall collapse will delay existing plans.
In response to the retaining wall collapse, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has closed the right lane of northbound I-295 from Exit 26, where the highway intersects with I-76, to Exit 28, which allows cars on and off Route 130. This is a high-volume section, especially during morning rush hour. Expect increased delays in the area, along with residual back-ups at times. NJDOT has not announced when the lane will reopen and there are currently no detours.
Highway driving can be dangerous and lane closures increase the risk of accidents. Drivers may have to adjust on the fly, and impatience or indecision can lead to avoidable outcomes.
