Thanksgiving Safety Tips
November 15, 2017
When there are more drivers on the road, the rate of traffic fatalities increases. Thanksgiving weekend is an especially dangerous time for this very reason. If you are planning to travel by car this Thanksgiving, whether you are heading across town or driving hours to reach family in another state, protect yourself and your passengers by taking safety precautions before you leave, during the drive, and as you prepare to make your return trip.
Prepare Your Vehicle
Check your vehicle’s tire pressure, fluid levels, and windshield wiper blades before you leave for Thanksgiving. If anything needs to be replaced or topped off, it is best to do so before your trip. Be sure to pack a breakdown safety kit in your vehicle. It should include:
- A first aid kit
- Basic tools
- Clean water
- A warm blanket
- Jumper cables
- A bright colored cloth to tie around your vehicle’s antenna for rescuers to see in the event your vehicle breaks down
Make Safe Choices
One of the most dangerous things an individual can do before they drive is drink alcohol. Alcohol impairs an individual’s perception and judgment, making them a hazard to themselves and others on the road. This Thanksgiving, choose either to drink or to drive, not both. If you choose to drink, stay with your host or travel home via public transportation, a rideshare service such as Uber, or a designated driver. Never get into a car with a driver who has been drinking. If you choose to drive, be extra vigilant of the other drivers on the roadway. On holiday evenings, there are more intoxicated drivers on the road. If you see another vehicle tailgating, swerving in and out of lanes, or failing to maintain a consistent speed, stay away from that vehicle and report it to your local law enforcement.
Take Safety Precautions in Your Own Vehicle
Always wear your seat belt when you are driving. If you are traveling with young children, make sure they are properly buckled into child safety seats to ensure that they are protected in the event of a collision. If you must take a call or send a message while you are driving, have a passenger make it on your behalf or pull off the road. Diverting your eyes from the road, even for a few seconds, drastically increases your chance of being involved in a car accident, which could leave you severely injured. Take a nap before leaving or drink coffee to ensure you are safe and alert to drive.
