Accidents are all too common and have increased in recent years. As jobs become more demanding, the rate of workplace accidents continues to rise. Every day, more workers are victimized by cutbacks and negligent workplace practices. For this reason, it is important for a worker to be aware of particularly pressing statistics regarding workplace accidents. Philadelphia Workers’ Compensation lawyers remind workers that benefits exist for work-related injuries.
Nationwide Injury Numbers Are on the Rise
According to studies and statistics, there are approximately 4.1 million workplace injuries nationwide every year. Of these, two million workers are hurt seriously enough to require ongoing medical care. Overall this number equals about 4.4 injured workers for every 100 full-time employees. Mid-size companies were found to have the highest rate of injured workers.
The Toll of Workplace Accidents
Tragically, workplace accidents turn out to be fatal all too often. Every year, an average of 165 workers lose their lives from an occupational illness. Car collisions accounted for the most worker fatalities overall, claiming the lives of approximately 1,300 per year. While fatal work accidents are the most devastating toll of workplace accidents, the monetary toll is also high. It was found that $155.5 billion is spent annually on work-related injuries and fatalities each year.
The Most Dangerous Workplaces
Several workplaces have proven to be more dangerous and accident-prone than others. Among the most dangerous are construction jobs. It was found that in construction jobs nationwide, there was an average of 15.2 fatal injuries for every 100,000 workers. These fatalities came from a wide variety of sources – car accidents, falls, equipment accidents, electrocution, or being struck by falling objects. Another dangerous job has proven to be healthcare.
