Camden County Brain Injury Lawyers: Traumatic Brain Injury and Parkinson’s Disease

September 15, 2015

Parkinson’s disease is a chronic movement disorder that gets progressively worse over time.  Neurons in the brain that produce dopamine die and the result is an inability to control movements of the body properly.  Recent findings published in the June 2015 Annals of Neurology suggest that patients aged 55 or older who suffer a traumatic brain injury (TBI) have an increased chance of developing Parkinson’s disease.

Primary symptoms of Parkinson’s include:

  • Tremor (affects hands, arms, legs, jaws and face)
  • Bradykinesia (slowness of movement)
  • Rigidity (stiffness of body)
  • Postural instability (unsteadiness)

Research physicians at the University of California, San Francisco used coding data from California emergency departments to identify patients in the target age bracket who suffered a TBI versus a non-traumatic brain injury trauma. In the six year span of the study, researchers estimated the risk of Parkinson’s disease after TBI and evaluated the patients in a follow up process.

The findings showed a 44 percent increased risk for subsequent development of Parkinson’s disease compared to the patients who suffered a non-traumatic brain injury trauma. The symptoms of Parkinson’s disease appeared within five to seven years. According to the study, the increased risk is unlikely to be attributable to confounding or reverse causation.
